My Favorite Breed is Rescued
We had a wonderful 1st experience with VOKRA Vancouver Orphan Kitty Rescue Association, so we opted to adopt through them again.
Our adoption counselor sent us pictures of the kitties. We expressed our interest to adopt. Then we connected with the foster family for an in person visit.
The visit was just as much for us as it was for VOKRA. We went to see if the kitties were a good match for us and the fosters watched our interaction to assure the same and make sure we were good people.
This may seem like a lot, but I love how much effort is put into making sure all their cats go to good homes. Especially because most of their kitties have a traumatic start in life.
Our babies are no exception. They were found in a box with 13 other kittens. 2 had already died, and the remaining kittens were severely underweight and had parasites. The foster family lovingly nursed them back to health and now they are in their furever home!
Preparing the Kitty Nursery
Before their arrival, we assembled the nursery.
Most important thing was a secure pet carrier. We have a hard shell carrier, but it was traumatic for our previous cats. This time we opted for a soft shell. It even has a nice soft pad inside for comfort.
The Right Stuff
Kittens are much like babies, they eat EVERYTHING! This includes litter. VOKRA taught us that clumping litter is dangerous to little ones. So we went to Rona to get some wood pellets, 40lbs for $8!
What a difference! It smells better, easy to clean as you just dump it every couple of days and cost effective.
Mom, I’m Hungry!!!
The next necessity was food. VOKRA always recommends the best quality wet food. The ones with the least additives. This time we are using First Mate which is proudly made in BC. They have Cage Free Turkey and Wild Tuna for breakfast and lunch. Then they have Cage Free Chicken and Rice for Dinner.
Because the kittens are recovering from parasites, we add some Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Ultra Soft Mousse to their meals. It helps them get their calories and helps their microbiome recover. This is a veterinary specific formula, so purchase from your preferred vet.
For treats they love the Pacific Ocean Fish Meal and Blueberries dry cat food. These cats will get this 10% of the time because kidney disease is so prevalent. In the past our cats primarily ate kibble, but after losing 2 to CKD, these kittens will be wet food fed.
Wet Your Whistle
That’s another issue, getting cats to drink water. So we bought a water fountain. It has a filter I change once a month, a light to be seen in the night and the kittens are fascinated by the streaming water.
Play Time
Another thing we’re changing is regular feeding times, no more free feeding. Cats in the wild hunt, eat then sleep. For the hunting, we play. They go bananas for a wire dancer and chasing balls with bells or rattles inside. Plus, we bought them a wicked cat tree to climb.
For When They Finally Stop Moving
They have an assortment of beds as we wanted to see what they like. Taco is all about comfort and loves his donut bed & makes biscuit like it’s his Momma. Spicy likes the heat & loves the self warming bed.
Cat Scratch Fever
Lastly, we got scratching pads. They need them to mark their territory, show excitement or stress and shed their nails. When they get older I will introduce cat nip and cat grass. Their teeth aren’t fully developed yet so cat grass is contraindicated and kittens don’t need to be more excited.
Kangaroo Pouch
I almost forgot! I am that EXTRA fur mom and I got this Hoodie to carry the babies around in. Right now, it is awesome when I am working on the computer. They just snuggle together in the pocket.
When it comes to our furbabies, we’re going to love them so much, they know immediately if they are ever mistreated.
Welcome to our world Spicy & Taco! We love you already!
